Frequently asked questions

  • PromisePay is an online platform that helps you pay off your total balance over time. It's secure, easy to use, and now available through a partnership with the City of New Orleans to offer payment plans for Business Personal Property taxes (BPP).

  • The City of New Orleans is partnering with PromisePay to give business owners a new option to handle past-due Business Personal Property taxes. For the first time, eligible businesses can split their balance into smaller, more manageable monthly payments instead of paying the full amount all at once.

  • Any business owner with a past-due Business Personal Property tax balance with the City of New Orleans incurred before July 1, 2025, is eligible to enroll in a payment plan.

  • Businesses can enroll in a PromisePay Payment plan from July 1 to September 30, 2025.

  • For the first time, eligible businesses can break their past-due balance into monthly payments. With this program, you can:

    • Enroll online once your delinquent bill is issued in July
    • Pay over time with monthly installments that fit your budget
    • Use a secure, easy-to-use platform to manage your payments and stay on track
  • Yes. Louisiana law requires interest to be collected on all past-due taxes. Your plan will include statutory interest at 1%/month based on the due date of each tax year outstanding.

PromisePay will estimate your payment plan total based on the current balance due at enrollment, plus 12 months interest (12%) to account for it continuing to accrue each month of your plan.

When you finish your plan or choose a payment plan shorter than 12 months, the City will credit any extra amount paid towards a future tax bill on the property in question.

To lower your total interest, we recommend choosing the shortest payment plan that works for your budget.

  • Yes. There is a $3.00 transaction fee for each payment made through PromisePay.

  • You can enroll in just a few minutes by following these steps:

    1. Choose a plan that works for you. There are multiple options available.
    2. Make your first payment using a credit/debit card or a bank transfer (ACH).
    3. Pay over time. We make it easy with automated monthly payments and helpful reminders.
  • You can check your eligibility by visiting https://nola-bpp-tax.promise-pay.com.

  • Your payment plan includes:

    • Your past-due Business Personal Property tax balance, and
    • An estimated interest amount based on a 12-month interest accrual period.

The City of New Orleans is required to charge interest on overdue taxes. If you pay off your plan early or choose a shorter term, any overpaid interest will be credited to your future tax bills. To reduce interest costs, we recommend selecting the shortest plan that still works for your budget.

  • This payment plan only covers past-due balances.

Any new Business Personal Property Tax bills incurred after July 1, 2025, should be paid directly to the City of New Orleans.

  • PromisePay plans are designed to be flexible so businesses can stay on track.

    You can:

    • Update your payment method
    • Change your monthly payment date
    • Request an extension for a specific monthly payment

Just make sure at least one payment is made each month to stay enrolled and in good standing.

  • To stay in good standing:

    • Start a PromisePay plan and make all your payments on time, and
    • Pay any new tax bills from the City of New Orleans by their due date.

As long as you do both, you won’t face legal penalties.

  • Enrolling in a PromisePay plan does not affect your eligibility for community-based grants or other relief programs. If you're qualified, you can still receive them.

However, Tax Clearance required by Section 2-8 of the Code of the City would still require all delinquent taxes be paid. A PromisePay plan would not allow a taxpayer to circumvent Tax Clearance.
